Mobitopia 2.0

mobitopia used to be a group blog. I just noticed that it was updated to be a social bookmark service for mobile. It has a great collection of mobile websites. Check it out.

Steve Jobs: “Nobody uses Java anymore”

via Ed Burnette’s blog
source: Pogue’s Post: Ultimate iPhone FAQs List

Markoff: “And what are you thinking about Flash and Java?”
Jobs: “Java’s not worth building in. Nobody uses Java anymore. It’s this big heavyweight ball and chain.”
Markoff: “Flash?”
Jobs: “Well, you might see that.”

Does this “nobody uses Java anymore” only refer to Mac OS X?
iPhone might not need Java on it to make it successful. But Mr. Jobs seems to be completely ignoring the pervasiveness and success of Java ME on mobile phones.

[update 1] Andrea left a comment and pointed out that the original conversation about Java on iPhone is in the context of “browser”.

Java ME on T-Mobile Dash

One good news for T-Mobile Dash (aka HTC Excalibur) users is that it has JVM built-in. It is the Jeodek JVM from Esmertec. I installed a few of my favorite Java ME applications. Gmail works very well. Google Maps works after I ignored the “uncaught exception” error message. But Opera Mini and WidSets have the same problem: the left softkey is not functional. My first thought is that Opera Mini and WidSets map it to a wrong keycode. But it turns out to be a JVM bug.

Nokia likes ‘computer’ and Apple likes ‘phone’

Nokia N76

There are too many iPhone news and blog entries around web. Apple has been moving away from being solely a computer maker for several years. But iPhone makes Apple finally drop “computer” from the company name.

Interesting enough, Nokia started to call its phones “portable multimedia computer”. I kind of understand why Nokia N95 is called “computer” because for the first time so many impressive stuff (5MP camera, GPS etc) are bundled together. But why this new slim, RAZR-like N76 is called “portable multimedia computer”?

Windows Live Search on T-Mobile Dash

Mobile version of Windows Live Search are available for both Java ME and Windows Mobile (.NET CF). I installed the native version to my T-Mobile Dash and the UI is much better than the Java version I installed on Nokia E61. It is a must-have app for Windows Mobile devices.
