BREW: customize the UI

A lot of news from BREW 2004 Developer Conference. Here is one:

"The new BREW user interface technology works through Qualcomm’s new BREW 3.1 client software and UI Toolkit 1.0 for handset makers. The technology allows handset manufacturers to use BREW to develop all of the software in a mobile-phone user interface—from the features of the address book to the functions of the messaging software to the color of the menu lists.".

"Because the BREW UI is based on Qualcomm’s BREW application distribution system, users could potentially download modifications and enhancements to their user interfaces. For example, Qualcomm’s Kenagy said users could download new UI “skins” based on their favorite sports team or musician. Much like desktop computer themes, the UI skins would replace standard menu icons and colors with those of the Denver Broncos or Britney Spears, for example. But that’s just the beginning."

It is a nice move for BREW to become a real platform, but the idea is not new. For Series 60 Developer Platform 2.0, developer can write new themes using Theme Studio. Check out this Symbian Themes site, you will find a lot free themes for your Nokia 6600. It is a coincidence that I found a Britney one.

Symbian application certification program

Symbian announced Symbian Signed, the industry-endorsed application signing program that promotes best practise in Symbian OS content and application development. It is very similiar to Qualcomm’s True BREW Testing(TBT) for BREW applications. But Qualcomm has much tight control over the applications because application will not be availalble on BREW Distribution System (BDS) unless it passes TBT.

Symbian Signed test criteria

Sun also has its Java Verified Program. So far Java Verified Program only covers a few MIDP handsets from Nokia, Motorola, Siemens and Sony Ericsson.
