Linux on iPod

In case you bought a new iPod Shuffle and dump your old iPod :), try this Linux on iPod. Here is a recent review: Review of Linux on the iPod.

Actually, by installing it, you only gain more functionality and still can use the Apple supplied OS.

I was wrong about Google SMS

There is a good discussion about the new Google SMS service on Russ’s blog. I posted two comments there and this RCR news shows that what I guessed is actually opposite to the reality.

RCR: "Businesses do not pay to be included in the listings"

Me: "It is a promotion of Google Local service. Hey, want to list as a pizza store under ZIP code 10013? Pay us. That Oliveri Jos Pizza store is very happy now. Everybody reading GOOGL news knows that name.

RCR: "Google said it is not taking a percentage of SMS charges"

Me: Google could share revenue with carriers because this kind of service will promote SMS traffic, which is not good in US yet.

And according to RCR, wireless users will incur no charges above the text messaging fees assessed by their carrier!
Anyway, it is a cool service and I believe it is a milestone showing that Google is penetrating every corner of our life, no matter you are front of a computer or on the road.

Virtual Girlfriends

One Hong Kong company Artificial Life lauches "cyber girlfriend" on mobile phones: "All virtual girls will look the same - but each girl will behave differently - depending on how much money is spent on her." "If players neglect her, she will refuse to speak."

This is not a new idea. Back to 2001, one Hong Kong company had an "I-DATE U" service based on text messages.

Useful FireFox Extensions

I will be very surprised if somebody is still using IE as a primary browser. Besides features like tabbed browsing and popup blocking, FireFox has a large number of extensions available. Some extensions are very useful for Web developers, such as livehttpheaders,
the Web developer extension and AutoForm toolbar.

Those two extensions may be useful for wireless developers: wmlbrowser and Small Screen Rendering.

And I use RSS Reader Panel to read my favorite RSS feeds.
