Steve Jobs: “Nobody uses Java anymore”
via Ed Burnette’s blog

Markoff: “And what are you thinking about Flash and Java?”
Jobs: “Java’s not worth building in. Nobody uses Java anymore. It’s this big heavyweight ball and chain.”
Markoff: “Flash?”
Jobs: “Well, you might see that.”
Does this “nobody uses Java anymore” only refer to Mac OS X?
iPhone might not need Java on it to make it successful. But Mr. Jobs seems to be completely ignoring the pervasiveness and success of Java ME on mobile phones.
[update 1] Andrea left a comment and pointed out that the original conversation about Java on iPhone is in the context of “browser”.
[update 2] For more discussion about Java on iPhone you may check this thread on JavaLobby: Steve Jobs on iPhone: No Java For You

Mac / OS X is the universe for Mr. Jobs; anything else is inconsequential… so from his perspective it either is native coding against the OS X, or Web (HTML, HTTP, Javascript, etc etc etc) - the rest doesn’t matter and is a distraction. From the perspective of mobile, they are inventing/focusing on their own thing, so the rest (except for native and web) is inconsequential…

In the quoted sentece he was talking about the browser and it’s true: nobody use it as browser plugin (applets) anymore.
Often you have plan html or javascript (AJAX) on the client side and Java on the server side.
Said that I think not having Java on iPhone (not speaking about the browser now) is a bad choice.
Flash it’s a bit more complex to program than Java, it allows better GUI’s , but the underlying infrastructure it’s less complex in Java
